Year 2

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Term three has seen us completely online. Year two students have mastered Zoom and all its tricks and treasures - and managed to teach the teachers a few new skills too!

We started the term with a look at poetry; studying acrostic poems, rhyming poems and shape poems. The children used their senses to evoke imagery and entertain readers with simple figurative language.

We delved into story writing in our narrative unit, exploring the features of fiction texts and using ideas and characters in well-known stories to create our own narratives. We loved Pie Corbett's story, 'Why Spider has a Small Waist', and we used his ideas to create stories of our own. Some of our titles were 'Why Elephant has a Long Trunk', Why Giraffe has a Long Neck', 'Why Tiger has Stripes' and 'Why Snail is so Slimy'.

Term three saw us master multiplication and division. After spending a couple of weeks focusing on equal sharing and grouping, we extended our skills by using number lines to help us skip-count and arrays to help us visualise multiplication and division. In year two it is expected that we learn the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication facts before we start learning the 3s and 4s. We will continue this in term four.

Science has been our focus for integrates studies this term. We explored living things and life cycles and learned how science helps us take care of animals and people. In the later part of the term we learned about the water cycle and the importance of preserving the Earth’s resources. We designed information posters about the importance of water for our bodies as well as handy hints to use water sustainably and preserve our natural resources. In performing arts we focused on movement and responding to music while incorporating the elements of dance. This was achieved through our own exploration and following instructional prompts. This term we dissected music and its elements; melody, pitch, rhythm and lyrics. By the end of the term, we had a great understanding of the elements used to create music and were able to use this knowledge to construct our own lyrics.

We are overjoyed to get back to school in term four and enjoy the company of our friends and classmates once again. Please be reminded that children will need two water bottles each day, lunch, a snack and a hat!

Kind Regards,
Miss Pryce and Miss Tzourtzouklis
